We are now accepting abstracts for the OIS Research Conference 2023!
Please see the Call for Abstracts section for more information.

About the conference

Started in 2019, this conference brings together scholars from across disciplines who are interested in investigating and discussing the role and value of openness and collaboration in science. In addition to inspirational paper sessions, the conference program typically includes a keynote speech, an OIS Debate, and an OIS experimentation session related to the year’s conference theme. In these OIS experimentation sessions we “walk the talk” by experimenting with novel ways to do our own research. In the past, for example, we have co-conceptualized the OIS field from scratch (Beck et al., 2022), co-developed research proposals with “users” of our research (Beck et al., 2021), and explored how Artificial Intelligence will influence openness and collaboration in science (Beck, Poetz, & Sauermann, 2022).

Researching OIS includes investigating whether, how, and under which conditions applying open and collaborative practices along one or more stages of the scientific research process influences novelty, efficiency, and/or the impact of scientific research, taking a balanced view that recognizes important contingency factors on the individual, organizational, and ecosystem-level. Within this framework, paper presentation sessions at the conference are, among others, related to citizen and crowd science, university-industry collaborations, data and material sharing, inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations, and scientific networks.

More information on the atmosphere and session formats of previous OIS conferences can be found here.

Call for Abstracts

The organizing committee invites you to join the OIS Research Conference 2023 in Vienna, Austria (hybrid conference).

This year, the special conference theme focuses on SYNERGIES AND TENSIONS AROUND IMPACT: HOW DOES OIS COME INTO PLAY? Hence, we will critically reflect upon the influence of openness and collaboration on achieving scientific and societal impact. Do OIS practices promote societal impact at the expense of scientific productivity? Or, do they help us to achieve both and, if so, under what conditions?

Works both empirical and conceptual in nature are welcome, and abstracts (250-500 words in length) can be submitted along one of three tracks:

Track 1: Open and collaborative approaches along the entire scientific research process, including opportunities, challenges, and contingency factors. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • crowdfunding/crowdsourcing science and citizen science
  • open data/material sharing/re-use
  • OIS approaches to translating science into practice, science-industry relations, academic entrepreneurship
  • platforms facilitating OIS

Track 2: Ecosystems and organizational designs facilitating or constraining open and collaborative research approaches. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • institutional factors
  • local and national policies
  • intellectual property rights
  • incentive and impact measurement systems

Track 3: Micro-foundations of open and collaborative research approaches. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
• scientists’ motives for engaging in OIS

  • skills and capabilities for OIS
  • attitudes and beliefs supporting or blocking OIS
  • characteristics and motives of institutional entrepreneurs

Submissions related to this year’s special conference theme regarding the role of OIS in discussing synergies and tensions around impact are additionally welcomed.

Submission and registration

If you are interested in participating in the OIS Research Conference 2023, please submit your abstract through our conference management system by clicking here or by copy/pasting this address into your web browser: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=oisresearchconference23

The submission deadline is January 20. All submissions will be reviewed by the organizing committee, and information on abstract acceptance and conference registration will be provided by February 6.

Please note that:

  • we welcome abstracts from both early-stage and advanced research
  • the paper of the submitted abstract must not have been accepted for journal publication.
  • participating in the conference requires either getting an abstract accepted for presentation at the OIS Research Conference 2023 or being invited to contribute in an active role as a speaker, discussant, panelist, or session facilitator. Given that this year’s conference will once again be implemented in a hybrid format, allowing for in-person and virtual contributions and participation, we will additionally enable online participation in selected sessions for a broader audience. Practicalities

Participating in the OIS Research Conference is free of charge. The conference starts on May 8 and ends on May 10, 2023. The conference will be an in-person/online hybrid taking place at Impact Hub in Vienna, Austria, with online and offline elements to enable both in-person and virtual contributions and participation. We expect participants to be present throughout the program. A preliminary conference program, as well as additional information regarding conference-specific events and accommodation, will be made available to participants upon abstract acceptance in February 2023.

In addition to the paper presentation sessions, the conference program includes keynotes, panel debates, and OIS experimentation sessions. This year, these plenary sessions will link to the special conference theme related to “Synergies and tensions around impact” and the influence that openness and collaboration have on achieving scientific and societal impact.

Please contact us at bvf.pbasrerapr@yot.np.ng for any questions or to be added to our conference mailing list, which will ensure that you receive the latest updates about the annual OIS Research Conference.
