Research Needs and Priorities in Health Informatics

Brender et al. (2000) full text summary PDF

For which topic were research priorities identified?

health informatics

In which location was the research priority setting conducted?

international

Why was it conducted at all?

There exists a huge change potential enabled by the technology available within the Information Society. All of the above was the starting point of a study on the research needs and priorities in the next decade within health informatics, initiated by the Virtual Centre for Health Informatics, Aalborg University. The centre was at the end of its first 3 years of operation and a need for re-focussing its strategic investments and engagement was felt. This resulted among others in an initiative towards the present study.

What was the objective?

to re-focus strategic investments and engagement

What was the outcome?

a ranking list of 13 research topics

How long did the research prioritization take?

No information provided.

Which methods were used to identify research priorities?

Delphi

How were the priorities for research identified exactly?

Step 1: Delphi round 1: collecting questions by asking participants: What research questions would you intuitively point at as the ones which should be emphasized within the next 5-10 years as the most important addressing the Information Society in health care? Step 2: data processing: commenting, editing of submissions. Step 3: gathering feedback: correcting submission. Step 4: Delphi round 2: participants were asked to rate

Which stakeholders took part?

International experts from industry, politics, research, users. Overall, 29 stakeholders participated.

How were stakeholders recruited?

Candidate panel experts were identified on the basis of literature reviews on the topic or on the authors' personal knowledge. The list was supplemented with experts from domains outside the authors' personal area of expertise by recommendation according to the same criteria.

Were stakeholders actively involved or did they just participate?

Stakeholders were mere participants of the research prioritization process; they were not actively involved in the process.
