How were the priorities for research identified exactly?

Step 1: Delphi round 1: participants were asked to list 3 to 5 important topics for PIC nursing research, 357 suggestions. Step 2: content analysis: resulting in 47 research topics in 9 research areas. Step 3: Delphi round 2: participants were asked to rate each topic. Step 4: Delphi round 3: participants were asked to re-rate each topic based on mean ratings of round 2

Which stakeholders took part?

PIC nurses. Delphi round 1: 90 participants. Delphi round 2: 69 participants. Delphi round 3: 64 participants.

How were stakeholders recruited?

The inclusion criteria included being a nurse currently working in PICU or in an ICU who cared for children, who identified themselves as being primarily a PIC nurse and having an e-mail address. Contact details for participants were obtained through the ESPNIC registry and through personal contacts.

Were stakeholders actively involved or did they just participate?

Stakeholders were mere participants of the research prioritization process; they were not actively involved in the process.
