A Research Agenda for Hand Therapy

MacDermid et al. (2002) full text summary PDF

For which topic were research priorities identified?

hand therapy

In which location was the research priority setting conducted?

North America - Canada

Why was it conducted at all?

Hand therapy has foundations in physical and occupational therapy and thus shares some of the scientific foundations developed by these two disciplines. However, if hand therapy is to be recognized as an independent discipline, it must have its own science.

What was the objective?

to establish research priorities in the field of hand therapy and to investigate barriers to hand therapy research

What was the outcome?

a list of 13 research topics

How long did the research prioritization take?

No information provided.

Which methods were used to identify research priorities?

How were the priorities for research identified exactly?

Step 1: survey: participants were asked to list up to three of their most pressing concerns and the most critical clinical research questions affecting their hand therapy practices. Step 2: data processing: thematic analysis, questions categorized into clinical areas, questions then assigned to type of research study required to answer the question, questions also assigned to research topics

Which stakeholders took part?

Hand therapists. 401 participants.

How were stakeholders recruited?

A mailing list consisting of the names of experienced hand therapists was compiled from a roster of all certified hand therapists, obtained from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission, and from a register of active charter members of the ASH.

Were stakeholders actively involved or did they just participate?

Stakeholders were mere participants of the research prioritization process; they were not actively involved in the process.
