Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement

Involve patients and the public as co-researchers in your projects

About

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) means carrying out research “with” or “by” patients and members of the public rather than “to”, ”about” or “for” them. PPIE activities aim to empower the public and people with lived experience through involving them in research. Projects benefit in terms of increased research quality and its impact on society: by addressing patients’ and the public’s needs and embracing their knowledge from personal experience or practice.

Research shows that early and continuous involvement of the public and patients has a positive impact both on conducting more patient-centered research and on how research is conducted. This significantly impacts research findings and empowers participating patients or citizens. Therefore, the PPIE Implementation Program aims to support activities with patients and the public in the area of ‘active involvement’ across the different phases of the research cycle (from setting the agenda to interpreting data) and research governance.

How we support you

We support the active involvement of patients and/or citizens in the research process and foster the development of a cooperative network in Austria. Academic and non-academic researchers, interested patients or patient organizations, citizens, and civil society organizations may contact us regarding the following offers:

Individual consultations on applications and implementation strategies

You might want to contact us for advice regarding PPIE activities, or if you have other queries concerning patient and/or public involvement in research. For individual consultation please contact us for an appointment, for a consultation via e-mail, telephone or in-person (in English or German). Prior to the consultation, we would ask to use our pre-check tool and to bring your results to the meeting, as it helps us to better understand how we might support you.

Training opportunities and peer network

The PPIE Programme also offers several training opportunities, most of these trainings are open for scientists and interested patients or citizens.

The PPIE projects we support and all interested stakeholders are invited to participate in a peer support network sharing and discussing challenges and opportunities working with patient and public involvement in research. The network is intended to enable a sustainable exchange and also to help find partners for PPIE activities. The peer support network meets on a regular basis.

We will inform on our event page about upcoming trainings and the activities of the network.
