Research for the PICS Study Outpatient Clinic
This spring, the LBI Digital Health and Patient Safety (DHPS), as part of the Interreg project DIGI4Care, conducted several focus group discussions with affected individuals on the topic of “Wearable Health Technologies After Intensive Care.” In this project, the LBI DHPS is researching, among other things, the development of a digital follow-up outpatient clinic for survivors of intensive care using Open Innovation in Science (OIS) approaches.
he focus groups were designed by Lisa Lichtenegger and Ákos Tiboldi (LBI DHPS and MUW) and moderated by Lara Arth (LBI OIS Center). Former intensive care patients as well as healthcare professionals were interviewed. The discussions focused on existing follow-up care options after an intensive care stay, as well as the feasibility and acceptance of innovative solutions—especially wearable technologies—to improve care for those affected.
Since January 2024, the Medical University of Vienna has also been intensively engaged with Post-Intensive-Care Syndrome (PICS). As part of the EU project “Smart and Silent ICU” (SASICU), a dedicated PICS outpatient clinic was established, focusing on structured follow-up care for intensive care patients and researching further digital care offerings. Although this physical outpatient clinic at MedUni Vienna is independent of the LBI DHPS DIGI4Care project, it provides important insights into the needs of PICS patients. Through this content-related cooperation, the DIGI4Care project can build upon the findings from the clinic, enabling future follow-up care to be enhanced by wearable technologies and a digital aftercare platform.
