In this webinar we will explore pedagogical practices that are most often applied in informal science education but can work in other settings. We will reflect on levels of culture, inquiry-based teaching, and the effects of culturally responsive pedagogy.
Facilitaors
Christine Marizzi, PhD is a geneticist who conducts research at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Science Outreach and Pandemic Preparedness (LBI SOAP) at the Medical University of Vienna. There, she is establishing an early warning system for pathogens that could cause potential pandemics, such as avian influenza. She also works in New York City as a Senior Community Scientist at BioBus and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Helene Dworak, PhD is a chemist with a background in traumatology and wound-healing research and is currently postdoctoral researcher at the LBI SOAP. Her work focuses on community science, aiming to build trust in science and to encourage the community to develop a deeper understanding of virology in order to be better prepared for future pandemics.
Description
Most educators and science outreach specialists acknowledge that a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching is ineffective, and a more student-centered approach is necessary for student success. Over the past few decades, students and their experiences, upbringings, and backgrounds have changed. Classrooms now reflect families of varying backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. As a result, the way science educators meet these students must change.
In this interactive workshop, we explore shifting approaches to education, compare them against traditional teaching models, and offer a number of strategies that you can use to incorporate the approach into your own methods. Come prepared to learn from other workshop participants and dive into reflections around your personal journey to science education and outreach. This workshop will be held in English.
