Caring Communities for Future

Transdisciplinary Research Projects within the Open Innovation in Science Impact Lab

In 2022, together with Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, we launched the Open Innovation in Science Impact Lab “Caring Communities for Future”—a collaborative space where we worked together to develop new solutions to the challenges of our time.

Until the end of 2025, the OIS Impact Lab supported transdisciplinary research projects that worked together with implementation projects in the fields of health promotion, care, and spatial planning to address concrete real-world challenges. The projects developed innovative perspectives on how health-promoting and caring communities can be sustainably embedded in practice. By involving civil society initiatives and municipal administrations, the aim was to improve citizens’ quality of life and health while also helping to relieve pressure on the health and care system.

The LBG OIS Center provided all project partners with ongoing opportunities for further training and capacity-building in transdisciplinary research, participatory methods, and collaboration with stakeholders from society, science, and practice. The cooperation between the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center and the Competence Centre for Future Health Promotion (FGÖ/GÖG on behalf of the BMSGPK) within the OIS Impact Lab also supported knowledge transfer between the research projects and innovative municipal practice projects.

Demographic change, the growing need for health promotion and care, and current socio-economic developments pose complex challenges for society, municipalities and cities, as well as the health and care system. This Impact Lab creates new opportunities to build on innovative approaches such as Caring Communities and Community Nursing and to further develop them with a view to the future.

Funded Projects

The Caring Communities for Future Lab served as a laboratory for open innovation and transdisciplinary research. As part of this OIS Impact Lab, five transdisciplinary research projects involving societal stakeholders were funded to advance and sustainably embed the concept of Caring Communities.

The projects developed innovative approaches designed to improve health and strengthen social cohesion in everyday life, while contributing to more resilient and community-oriented models of care.
