Cancer Mission Lab

Applications for the Cancer Mission Lab are now closed.

Every year, several million people worldwide are confronted with a cancer diagnosis, one quarter of them living in the EU. In response, the European Commission launched the EU Mission “Cancer”. Its goal is to save more than three million lives by 2030 and to improve the life expectancy and quality of life of those affected. This is to be achieved through close collaboration between science and society. Scientific and non-scientific actors are invited to jointly develop solutions to better understand cancer, detect it earlier, treat it more precisely, and improve the quality of life of those affected.

Three collaborative projects funded

The Cancer Mission Lab call of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft, funded by the Fonds Zukunft Österreich, anchored the EU Mission “Cancer” in Austria and supported three collaborative projects in the fields of primary and secondary prevention, as well as healthcare and patient outcome research. As part of the LBG Cancer Mission Lab, €1.5 million was made available to fund two to four projects in which scientific actors work together with people and institutions from other areas of society to develop innovative solutions.

These interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborative projects bring together research-based knowledge, lived experience, and practical expertise, thereby making a significant contribution to achieving the objectives of the EU Mission.

Cancer Mission Ideas Lab

The Cancer Mission Lab call was deliberately designed as a low-threshold funding opportunity to enable people from a wide range of professional, practical, and personal backgrounds to contribute their expertise and ideas. Collaborative projects were selected through a multi-stage process.

1. Application and Motivation Letter

Application period closed

Applications for the Cancer Mission Lab are now closed.

Researchers from all disciplines, healthcare professionals, companies, non-profit organisations, and patient organisations were invited to apply to participate in the Ideas Lab and contribute their expertise.

Applications were reviewed by an interdisciplinary jury comprising representatives from academia, patient organisations, and the healthcare sector.

2. Ideas Lab, Project Outline and Funding Recommendation

10–12 July 2024

During a three-day Ideas Lab, 29 participants selected by the jury came together to form interdisciplinary teams and develop project outlines. The Ideas Lab was facilitated by experienced moderators and mentors, providing a creative environment in which traditional hierarchies were deliberately minimised to encourage innovative thinking and new approaches.

At the end of the Ideas Lab, five project ideas were presented to the jury, which recommended three projects for funding.

3. Kick-off-Workshop

26 July 2024

The three projects recommended for funding participated in a kick-off workshop focusing on the anticipated impact and societal value of their research.

Impact experts from the LBG OIS Center supported the teams in further developing their project ideas. Together with each team, an individual timeline was established to guide the development of the project’s Theory of Change and the preparation of the full proposal.

4. Development of the Full Proposal

Until 8 November 2024

Projects recommended for funding had until early November 2024 to develop their project ideas into full proposals. Throughout this phase, all teams received continuous support from the experts at the LBG OIS Center.

5. Submission and Validation of the Project Proposal

Until 8 November 2024

By the submission deadline, all project teams had prepared a comprehensive project proposal, including a detailed budget and work plan.

The proposals were validated by the LBG OIS Center and the individual jury members by 30 November 2024. This validation assessed whether the recommendations and feedback provided by the jury during the Ideas Lab had been adequately addressed.

6. Project Duration

1 January 2025 – 31 December 2027

Projects successfully validated by both the jury and the LBG OIS Center officially started on 1 January 2025 and must be completed by 31 December 2027 at the latest.

Throughout the project period, the LBG OIS Center supports the collaborative projects by facilitating reflection on their Theory of Change, providing tailored capacity-building and competency training, and fostering the development and management of an active project network. In addition, project teams can draw on the expertise of the LBG OIS Center whenever needed.

Funded Projects

During the Ideas Lab, held from 10–12 July 2024, 29 participants from academia, civil society, the healthcare sector, and patient organisations came together in five transdisciplinary teams to develop five innovative project outlines. Following an intensive evaluation process, an interdisciplinary jury recommended three of these projects for funding. The selected teams then had until the end of 2024 to develop and submit their full project proposals.
