Our Identity

“Goal at the LBG OIS Center is to open up spaces for experimental as well as inter- and transdisciplinary work in research and innovation fields. The involvement of civil society actors and the development and expansion of communities around the research contexts of the LBG OIS Center play an important role. Together with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes, it is important to design exchange and transfer services and to apply them in the European Research Area.” – Georg Russegger, Head of LBG OIS Center

The LBG OIS Center supports OIS activities involving citizens and interest groups (e.g. patients and patient representatives, practitioners such as representatives of associations, public administration, health or educational institutions, NPOs/NGOs) through advice, funding, materials, tools, infrastructure as well as further training and networking.

Benefits for science

These OIS activities are not an end in themselves, but bring benefits for science (e.g. novel findings, more efficient processes, higher impact) as well as for society (e.g. research into socially relevant topics, greater rapprochement between science and society). Through OIS activities, socially robust knowledge is produced in a responsible manner to promote the social impact of scientific research.

The Open Innovation in Science Center of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG OIS Center) was founded in 2016 with funds from the Austrian National Foundation for Research, Technology and Development and sees itself as an essential part of Austria’s official Open Innovation strategy. The OIS Center acts as an (inter-)national hub for researching and implementing open and collaborative practices in scientific research (OIS activities).
